Lawmakers hopeful Child Safe Product Act will pass Senate

Legislative Gazette

Lawmakers say a bill that would ban certain chemicals in toys may finally pass the Senate this session, moving the state forward on protecting children from harmful toxins. The Child Safe Products Act has passed the Assembly several times, including this year, but is yet to make it through the Senate.

Advocates of the bill lobbied senators Tuesday using the iconic rubber duck toy as a mascot including a 25-foot blow up duck outside the Capitol. The bill (S.04614/A.06328) establishes a list of chemicals of high concern that have been shown to negatively impact health. In the first year, companies would be required to test their products for the chemicals and alert consumers of their presence. In subsequent years, an outright ban on the sale of toys containing any of the toxins would be imposed.
