Victims of sex conversion therapy share painful stories with state senators

Depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts consumed the lives of those who had to endure sex conversion therapy in an effort to change their sexual orientation, victims shared in heartbreaking stories during a state Senate hearing Thursday.
One gay man was told to cut off interactions with women, including his mother and sisters. Another was ordered to speak in a lower tone of voice, play sports and never cross his legs. Still another was subjected to electro-shock therapy.
State Sen. Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan), along with Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) and Manhattan Assemblywoman Deborah Glick, convened the hearing as part of their push to ban licensed mental health professionals from performing sex conversion therapy to anyone under 18. Hoylman argues that it causes "irreparable" damage to LGBT youth and their families.
