Poll: Rangel, below 50, leads Espaillat by 9

Azi Paybarah

Rep. Charlie Rangel has a nine-point lead over his nearest rival, State Senator Adriano Espaillat, according to a New York Times-NY1-Siena poll, the first public poll taken in the race.

Rangel leads Espaillat 41 percent to 32 percent.

The poll showed a deep racial divide, with Espaillat leading by 27 points among Hispanic voters, and Rangel leading by 63 points among black voters.

The result was immediately seized upon by both campaigns as evidence of their respective strength, one month before the June 24 Democratic primary.
