Mayor de Blasio signs bill expanding rent program for seniors

Mayor de Blasio signed a bill Thursday raising the maximum income level of senior citizens eligible for rent breaks from $29,000 to $50,000 a year.

The legislation will take effect July 1, and will benefit New Yorkers 62 and older for two years when they apply for the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption program.

"Getting the word out, making sure everyone who qualifies takes advantage of it, is at least as important if not more important" than the bill signing, de Blasio said.
