Conviction overturned in NYC cop cannibalism case

AP

A former NYPD officer was set to be released from jail Tuesday after a federal judge overturned his 2013 conviction for a gruesome plot to kidnap women, cook them and dine on their "girl meat."

The kidnapping conspiracy conviction against Gilberto Valle was rejected by Manhattan Federal District Court judge Paul G. Gardephe, who said there was not enough evidence to support it. Valle faced a sentence of up to life in prison for that conviction.

“The evidentiary record is such that it is more likely than not the case that all of Valle’s Internet communications about kidnapping are fantasy role-play,” Gardephe said in an opinion issued late Monday.

Valle smiled at his family and hugged his lawyers in court on Tuesday. The judge set bail at $100,000 and ordered home detention for the defendant after prosecutors told him they intended to appeal his ruling.
