NY-13 campaigns fined $105k for illegal signs

Azi Paybarah

The city has assessed $105,075 in fines to campaigns in the 13th Congressional District for illegally posting signs on public property, as they campaigned ahead of the June 24 primary, a sanitation official told Capital.

The sanitation department cited 1,401 violations—each for $75—according to spokesman Chief Keith Mellis. The 13th district covers Harlem, Upper Manhattan and parts of the South Bronx.

Rep. Charlie Rangel, who won the Democratic primary, was assessed fines for 236 illegal signs, worth $17,770.

The campaign of Rangel’s main challenger, State Senator Adriano Espaillat, was fined for 158 illegal signs, worth $11,850.
