‘We’re ready:’ M.T.A. braces for an LIRR strike

Dana Rubinstein

If Long Island Rail Road workers strike, as they are threatening to do in nine days' time, the M.T.A. believes it can handle it.

”We’re better prepared than we were in 1994," said M.T.A. chairman Tom Prendergast in a Friday afternoon conference call with reporters. "And we’re ready to face a strike if it comes to that."

Prendergast would know.

Among the many uncanny parallels between the 1994 Long Island Railroad negotiations that culminated in a two-day strike and the 2014 Long Island Railroad negotiations is Prendergast himself, who 20 years ago "ran the emergency plan during the two-day LIRR strike," according to a Newsday article from the time.
