The mayor has landed - de Blasio family arrives in Rome

JENNIFER FERMINO

Mayor de Blasio, clad in khakis and carrying a roller suitcase, landed in Rome this morning for the start of his multi-city Italian holiday, which was delayed by a day following the death of a Staten Island man in police custody.

He arrived at Leonardo di Vinci airport with First Lady Chirlane McCray, who rattled off some Italian to reporters, daughter Chiara - who debuted a new hairdo - and a tired-looking Dante following a red-eye flight from Kennedy Airport. They left customs just before 11 a.m. local time, which is 5 am in New York.

De Blasio said the delay was important to stay in New York to speak with the community after Eric Garner's death.

"I spoke to a variety of community leaders, elected officials, clergy from Staten Island and around the city to get a sense of what people were feeling, what they thought we should do going forward," he said. "I thought it was very important to consult them."

JENNIFER FERMINO

When in Rome, Mayor de Blasio likes Sant'Eustachio Caffè.

The mayor, First Lady Chirlane McCray and Dante and Chiara stopped at the venerated coffee shop immediately after touching down in Italy Sunday morning after their seven hour flight.

The family bought some woodroasted ground coffee, and enjoyed the granita al cafe, a frozen coffee drink with whipped cream, according to the mayor's press office.

De Blasio posed for pictures with owner Raimondo Ricci and some custumers, and then the First Family left for their hotel.
