Astorino and Teachout team up to attack Cuomo on corruption

Conor Skelding

The two leading challengers to Governor Andrew Cuomo—Rob Astorino and Zephyr Teachout—appeared together in front of the Tweed Courthouse on Tuesday morning to jointly attack the governor for reneging on his own campaign promises to clean up Albany.

“I’m here today with a man that I disagree with on almost everything,” Teachout said, to chuckles from reporters. “Because recent events show that Governor Andrew Cuomo has not merely failed to clean up Albany, he has become … an example of the very thing he once promised to fix.”

Standing in front of a "Clean Up Albany" podium, Teachout, who is challenging Cuomo in the Democratic primary, attacked the governor for shuttering the anti-corruption Moreland Commission, and for saying, “It’s my commission,” by way of defending that decision.

“These are the words of a man who may have been so corrupted by his own power that he cannot understand that law and accountability still applies to him," Teachout said. “As citizens of this great state, we must see ourselves not only as the daughters and sons of democracy, but also as its mothers and its fathers. And we must fight to protect it against the threat of corruption, the threat that the Founding Fathers saw as the greatest threat to democracy."
