De Blasio Embraces Capri, Even While Avoiding Its Limelight.

CAPRI, Italy — There was no accidental meeting with Cameron Diaz, Lea Michele or Lindsay Lohan, just three of the celebrities spotted on this exclusive island in the past few days.

The famed luxury shopping arcade, dotted with Fendi and Hermès outlets, did not make the itinerary.

And while a security detail guarded the entrance to the hotel where Mayor Bill de Blasio was staying, the accommodations were modest — at least modest by the standards of an island where villas can rent for thousands of euros a night.

Mr. de Blasio raised some eyebrows by announcing he would spend two nights of his Italian vacation on Capri, a glittering island that has attracted Roman aristocrats and the global elite for centuries.

But in keeping with his finely tuned persona, Mr. de Blasio took pains here on Monday and Tuesday to ensure his Everyman bona fides remained intact.

He greeted locals at the ferry dock, posed for selfies with waiters and a local mayor, and slept in a low-key hotel across from a children’s playground.
