After Eric Garner's death, NYCLU, labor groups push Gov. Cuomo to veto bill making police discipline a union matter

In the aftermath of the death of Eric Garner after a confrontation with cops in Staten Island, the New York Civil Liberties Union and labor groups are pushing Gov. Cuomo to veto a bill they say would hamstring the ability of local governments to discipline police for misconduct.
Police have the power to arrest, jail and use force against New Yorkers, said NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman.
Their job responsibilities impact and can even destroy the lives of others. This power is simply too great to open up to negotiations."
Garner, an asthmatic 43-year-old father of six, died last Thursday after police -- who suspected him of illicitly selling loose cigarettes -- put him in what appeared to be a chokehold.
