New York City ex-pol Daniel Halloran admits in court he accepted $10,000 payoff

BY SABRINA CASERTA , DAREH GREGORIAN NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Former New York City Councilman Daniel Halloran admitted in court Thursday to taking a $10,000 cash payment from a businessman he thought was "shady" and copped to fudging IRS and election documents.

After five days of testifying in his own defense against corruption charges, Halloran wilted under a blistering cross-examination from federal prosecutor Douglas Bloom.

Halloran is charged with taking payoffs from two businessmen to quarterback a scuttled scheme to get Democratic state Sen. Malcolm Smith on the GOP line for last year's mayoral election.

Unbeknownst to Halloran, one of the businessmen, Moses (Mark) Stern, was an FBI informant while the other, identified as "Raj," was an undercover FBI agent.
