Moskowitz: Success Academy could be national model

Eliza Shapiro

Continuing her run of high-profile national appearances, Success Academy C.E.O. Eva Moskowitz testified before Congress on Tuesday at a panel on economic opportunity for African-Americans, arguing that elements of her charter school network could be applied nationwide to help address educational disparities for black students.

Moskowitz, one of four panelists at the Joint Economic Committee's hearing on "Increasing Economic Opportunity for African-Americans," brought a group of Success students with her to the hearing.

She rattled off Success' high test scores, noting that 94 percent of its students are black or Hispanic, and attributed Success' standing to a demanding STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education curriculum, including coding classes that start in kindergarten, extensive teacher and principal training, and extracurricular activities like chess, art and dance.
