City students' math, reading test scores inch up, teachers union estimates

STEPHEN REX BROWN , BEN CHAPMAN

Pass rates for state reading and math exams that city students took last spring will likely inch up slightly but still be astonishingly low, according to teachers union estimates.

The United Federation of Teachers estimated 28% of the city’s third- through eighth-graders will be reading at grade level on the 2014 exams, which are tied to the state’s new Common Core academic standards — up two points from 2013 pass rates.

Around 33% will be able to do math on grade level, the union projected — a three-percentage point increase from the 2013 rates.
