Walkway elevator to open to the public Thursday-Hudson River

John Davis, Poughkeepsie Journal

The long-awaited elevator from the Poughkeepsie waterfront to the Walkway Over the Hudson that opens on Thursday is being welcomed by local residents and city business owners.

"I think it's great that it's happening," said Mary Flad, longtime resident of Academy Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. The Walkway has become such a terrific magnet for Poughkeepsie and the elevator is only going to increase that by multiple."

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced Friday the opening of the elevator will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday. The agency owns and operates the Walkway, the pedestrian bridge spanning the Hudson River between the City of Poughkeepsie and Highland.
