CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. -- Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said he wants to hear from anyone who witnessed or took video of former NASCAR champion Tony Stewart hit Kevin Ward Jr., a 20-year-old sprint car driver who died Saturday night.
"We're trying to collect the facts so we can definitively identify the cause of the crash," Povero said Sunday night. "The world is watching. We're working on it diligently."
The events leading to Ward's death began to unravel around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff said. First, Ward's car spun out and struck a retaining wall as he came out of Turn 2, Povero said. The crash happened during lap 14 of the 25-lap Lucas Oil SuperSprint Feature race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, a half-mile dirt track at the Ontario County Fairgrounds.
