IG finds ethical lapses with veterans counselors

Rick Karlin

This is a theme that has come up with all sorts of caregivers or caretakers for the elderly but this is extra troubling since it involves state employees and veterans.

Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott has found that two state Division of Veterans Affairs ended up being named in the wills of the veterans they were supposed to be assisting.

One WWII veteran even opened a joint bank account with a DVA counselor which she used for personal expenses and he signed over a $23,000 BMW to her.

The IG said the DVA has since put in place guidelines regarding gifts from clients to agency counselors.
