SUNY colleges seek to improve sexual assault prevention

Jessica Bakeman

ALBANY—SUNY campuses have changed the way they handle sexual assaults and train students and staff in prevention strategies after a November agreement with the federal government regarding Title IX compliance.

As part of the agreement, SUNY agreed to improve its adherence to Title IX, a landmark law that prohibits gender-based discrimination in educational institutions that receive federal assistance.

The settlement came after federal investigators found a “sexually hostile environment" on some SUNY campuses. The agreement was hailed as a major achievement in combating sexual violence on college campuses, given SUNY's size; with 64 campuses and more than 460,000 students, it is the nation's largest public university system.

Since the agreement, state colleges have been updating policies that govern hearings for the adjudication of sexual assault allegations, educating incoming students about consent, encouraging current students to intervene if they witness acts of sexual violence and expanding the on-campus network of people trained to deal with the complex issues.
