Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito reveals on Twitter she has ‘high risk HPV’

Dropping a health bombshell, Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito disclosed Sunday that she has “high risk HPV.”

The 45-year-old East Harlem Democrat went public with her diagnosis for the human papillomavirus in several posts on Twitter.

“To say I’m not wee bit worried = lie,” Mark-Viverito tweeted. “‘High risk HPV’ can POTENTIALLY but NOT definitively lead to cervical #cancer.”

Mark-Viverito revealed she learned the startling results of a recent gynecological exam Friday and that she needs a biopsy fast.

It had been a while since I had seen a gynecologist — two years, in fact. I know I am supposed to have an annual exam, but as many of us do, I allowed time to pass and work to take over.

Last Friday, I learned that I have high-risk HPV, the human papilloma virus. It means that I face the possibility of developing cervical cancer. That’s why my doctor ordered me to have a biopsy, as I did Tuesday.
