Rob Astorino’s jobs plan: Fracking, flat spending, canal split and more

Jon Campbell

Republican gubernatorial hopeful Rob Astorino on Tuesday launched a tour of the state to tout his newly unveiled jobs plan, which calls on the state to authorize hydraulic fracturing, hold state spending flat and use part of a financial settlement to take oversight of the state’s canal system from the state Thruway Authority.

Astorino, the Westchester County executive, unveiled the seven-part plan in Binghamton. The broad plan takes aim at several perennial issues at the state Capitol—such as the repeal of the much-debated Scaffold law—while laying out new ideas, such as the creation of a farmers-only EZ Pass that would allow the agriculture industry to avoid paying Thruway tolls.

I hope he is able to resist the unfathomably deep cash-box that is big oil. We've fought off two attempts to install a gas pipeline through our town while Pataki was in office. He better not or he'll have to run as a Republican for the rest of his life.

He was raised with a conscience, let's hope he will do the right thing and ultimately stand up for the people and the land.
