Watkins Glen board opposes gas storage expansion plans

Ray Finger

The Watkins Glen Village Board this week voted in opposition to Crestwood Midstream's plans to store liquefied petroleum gas in underground salt caverns next to or under Seneca Lake, Mayor R. Mark Swinnerton Jr. said.

The board on Monday approved a resolution by a 3-0 vote asking the state Department of Environmental Conservation to withhold approval of any LPG storage plan at Seneca Lake and to identify a more appropriate location for a storage site.

Village officials are concerned about additional truck traffic and the potential impact on the water source that is about a half-mile from the proposed storage site, he said.
