Tonko: Port spill shows ‘gluttonous dependency’ on fossil fuels

Scott Waldman

ALBANY—A few hours after an oil spill near the Port of Albany released 100 gallons of crude, Rep. Paul Tonko said it was another sign that the nation needs to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

Tonko, a Democrat, had a previously scheduled tour of the port on Thursday morning, where millions of gallons of crude are handled every day. He said the minor spill, one of a number of such spills at the crude-handling facilities at the port in recent months, was a reminder of the need to invest in more renewable energy.

“These are the dangerous elements associated with our dependency, our gluttonous dependency, on fossil-based fuels,” he said.
