2. editorial: Fix errors that cost NYC schools $356 million

Staten Island Advance Editorial

Students in the public schools on Staten Island and across the city have become victims of a series of financial errors by the Department of Education. The oversights were egregious.

Because it didn't file the proper paperwork in a timely manner, the DOE was unable to collect $356 million it would have been eligible to receive from the federal government.

Letting the sunshine in, NYC Council vows 'fair, transparent, and public' pick of new Board of Elections commissioner

CELESTE KATZ

Now they're talking.

After nearly two months of revealing little to nothing to the public about how it will pick a new Board of Elections commissioner, the City Council on Tuesday promised it will make a pick with unprecedented transparency.

“The City Council takes its role in appointing new commissioners to the Board of Elections extremely seriously and the reforms the Council has put in place will ensure the appointment process is fair, transparent and public,” Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito said in a statement.

4. Queens Assemblymember Fears Chalk-based Graffiti Toy Will Usher in New Urban Dystopia
Wed Aug 27, 2014, 12:52 PM

Jon Campbell

State Assemblymember Phillip Goldfeder is very worried; there's a toy on local shelves that's turning children into criminals.

It's called Kidffiti, and it's a chalk-based imitation spray paint kit. It sprays powdered chalk in an unwholesome array of colors. And it might be sending the city's children down a very dark path. Won't somebody think of the children, you ask? Assemblyman Goldfeder is doing just that.

5. Westboro Baptist Church Will Also Picket Gawker, Buzzfeed, Foursquare, Basically Everybody Else

Anna Merlan

Last week, we told you that the Westboro Baptist Church, a merry band of noxious trolls with questionable ties to Jesus, is returning to New York to picket the New York Times, Facebook, the Huffington Post, and the 9/11 Memorial Museum. It appears that the WBC has realized that picketing media outlets is a good way to get attention: they've added a couple dozen other websites, publishing companies and tech ventures to their picket schedule. This is probably our fault. Sorry, everyone. Sorry.

Not exactly an A for effort.

The city Conflicts of Interest Board gave a failing ethics grade -- and a $7,000 fine -- to an assistant principal who secretly fixed his son's failing grades 11 times.

9. The G Train is Back. And Riders Are Not Happy.

Kat Aaron

Brooklyn and Queens, the nightmare is over. The full G train will be back in service next week.

A section of the line between Court Sq. and Nassau Ave. shut down in July for five long weeks to fix damage from Superstorm Sandy. Riders feared the worst. For many commuters, the G is their only point of access to the subway system, and people were skeptical that the MTA’s shuttle buses would manage to replace the trains.

10. Crime at 6-year low on Staten Island Railway; new police strategies and security cameras cited
Wed Aug 27, 2014, 03:20 PM
Aug 2014

Vincent Barone

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Since 2008, the Staten Island Railway has gotten safer every year, according to police records.

The number of crimes reported on the SIR has decreased from 130 in 2008, to 61 in 2013. It's a drop that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority credits to increased NYPD patrols during school hours and the strategic deployment of plainclothes officers and K9 units.

11. Bill de Blasio Heckled While Touting NYCHA Safety Gains
Wed Aug 27, 2014, 03:58 PM
Aug 2014

Jillian Jorgensen

Mayor Bill de Blasio went to the Lincoln Houses in East Harlem to talk about crime reductions and safety upgrades in the city’s public housing stock — but some residents just didn’t want to hear it.

The mayor was heckled by at least two people who gathered to watch his press conference in a sunny courtyard Wednesday, where he stood strategically in front of construction workers removing scaffolding residents have long complained are a blight and a danger.
