Xerox ordered to pay $4.9 million in legal fees
A federal judge has ordered Xerox Corp. to pay nearly $4.9 million to the lawyers of employees who alleged that the company once secretly used a mechanism that significantly reduced workers' pensions.
U.S. District Judge David Larimer ordered Xerox to pay the attorney fees in a ruling last week.
The Xerox lawsuit, filed in 2000, has traveled a twisting journey, twice reaching a federal appellate court and once making its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The lawsuit was filed by employees who once left the company — either by choice or layoff — then later returned. While the number of affected employees who sued was only about 100, the lawsuit was widely watched because of questions about Xerox's apparent lack of transparency with its pension calculations.
