John Cleese compares New York hotels to 'Fawlty Towers'

John Cleese thinks some New York hotels are nearly as shambolic as the one in his classic sitcom “Fawlty Towers” — and he shared his displeasure at a talk for Harper’s Magazine this week.

The Monty Python comedian said that during his current visit to the city, “he had the privacy light on, and someone came to his door to make sure he really meant to have it on,” an amused audience member told us.

He chatted with psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist, while David Hyde Pierce and his “A Fish Called Wanda” co-star Kevin Klein were in the audience.

Cleese is promoting his new book, “Professor at Large,” a collection of his lectures during his time as, er, professor at large at Cornell.

A classic. If done here they'd stretch it out for either eight or ten years and jump a dozen sharks.
