Bill increases fines for endangering companion animals
By DAN MOSHER
Assemblyman Fred Thiele, I-Sag Harbor, has introduced legislation increasing the penalties for confining a companion animal in a vehicle during times of extreme hot or cold temperatures.
As the law stands now, the fine for a first offense is not less than $50 and is not to exceed $100; a second offense carries with it a fine of at least $100 and no more than $250.
Under Thiele's new legislation, the fine for a first offense would be no less than $250 and no more than $500; for a second offense, the minimum fine would be increased to $500, and the maximum to $1,000.
Thiele's bill also would allow officers to remove a companion animal from a vehicle "where such confinement may place the companion animal in imminent danger of death or serious physical injury due to exposure to such extreme heat or cold."
