Council Set To Overturn Mayor's NYPD Oversight Bill Vetoes

NY1News

Two bills aimed at creating more oversight of the New York City Police Department are expected to go before the City Council for a crucial vote today.

The Council is set to vote on whether to override Mayor Michael Bloomberg's veto of the Community Safety Act.

The act includes one measure that would create an inspector general for the police department, and another that would allow people to sue the NYPD over alleged racial profiling.

Mayor Bloomberg vetoed both bills saying they would prevent police from fighting crime, and open the door to a flood of frivolous lawsuits.
