Mayor-elect Adams cancels Jan. 1 inauguration event in Brooklyn over COVID concerns

Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced Tuesday that he’s canceling his Jan. 1 inauguration event as the omicron variant of coronavirus continues to drive up infections and hospitalizations in the city.

Adams — who was supposed to be sworn in at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn alongside incoming Comptroller Brad Lander and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams — said they made the decision to cancel the large gathering “after consulting with public health experts.”

“Our joint inauguration ceremony will be postponed to a later date in order to prioritize the health of all who were planning to attend, cover and work on this major event,” the trio said in a joint statement.

“We thank the Kings Theatre for their interest in hosting this exciting moment in our city’s history, and everyone who has been working hard to plan this celebration. We look forward to getting together in person with our loved ones, colleagues and well-wishing New Yorkers to honor this great democratic tradition, and to thank all those who have made it possible, at a safer time in the weeks ahead.”
