Declarations Of Independence: The Influence Of Outside Spending Groups On NYC 2013
BY Celeste Katz
Democrat Bill Thompson has enjoyed more help from outside spending groups than any of his mayoral primary foes, city campaign finance reports show.
BRAWL NEW LOGO.jpgPublic Advocate Bill de Blasio has blown past Thompson and Christine Quinn in the polls in the home stretch, leaving them scrambling for the chance to face the Brooklyn frontrunner in a potential Oct. 1. runoff if no one wins outright on Sept. 10.
As of Sunday, IE groups had shelled out more than $1.5 million to help ex-controller Thompson -- nearly all of it spent by teachers' union-financed United for the Future.
Quinn, still the best-funded candidate, was breaking somewhat less than even on the teardown/buildup scale, per CFB records: NYC Is Not For Sale, which has been attacking the City Council speaker since this spring, had spent nearly $774,000 to erode her support. But four IE groups, led by Hotel Workers for a Stronger Middle Class, countered by spending $663,000 on positive messaging, the reports show.
