District Court judge Shira Scheindlin has appointed the director of the VERA Institute of Justice, Nicholas Turner, to oversee efforts to reform the police department’s stop, question and frisk program.

A federal judge on Wednesday formally appointed a monitor to oversee efforts to reform the city police department's stop, question, and frisk program.

District Court judge Shira Scheindlin says Nicholas Turner of the VERA Institute of Justice was chosen as part of the decision in the federal class action trial.

The Vera Institute is an independent organization that works to improve police relationships within communities.
