Mugger targets woman pushing baby carriage in New York City

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS (WABC) -- A mother is speaking out after she fought off an attacker with a bike pump in Fort Tryon Park in Washington Heights.

It happened just after 9 a.m. on a bike path in Fort Tryon Park, on the Henry Hudson Parkway near Dyckman Street.

The suspect approached the woman, who was pushing her 8-month-old baby in a stroller, with a broken bottle and grabbed her in a bear hug but she fought back, hitting him several times with an air pump, that she carries for the wheels on the baby stroller, causing a gash in the suspect's head.

"I had an extendable bike pump and I hit him. He got me in a bear hug and took me to the ground and I kept hitting up to his head cause he was behind me," said Mary Jane Jarman.

1. A horrific ordeal but I'm interested to know what kind of stroller she had as

many strollers are now status symbols costing hundreds. Women pushing these OTT stollers are making themselves targets by advertising their wealth.

2. This is true. We have a families in our church that have strollers that look like tanks.

3. The scary part is that thieves know that 99% of of mothers won't fight, their first impulse will be

protect their child.

4. Yeah my response would be to protect a child at all cost. But I am not a fighter so I would just

give them what they want.
