Senate confirms first African-American woman to state's highest court
A month after the announcement of her nomination by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to serve on the New York State Court of Appeals, Justice Sheila Abdus-Salaam became the newest judge of the seven member court after a unanimous Senate vote of approval.
The governor said Abdus-Salaam will "join a truly remarkable group of judges."
Abdus-Salaam, a former associate justice of the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, is the first African American woman to serve on the state's highest court.
"Justice Abdus-Salaam will bring decades of experience and dedication serving in the courts of New York to this prestigious and well-earned position. I have no doubt that she will serve with integrity in defending our constitution and laws and protecting the rights of New Yorkers. She has my sincerest congratulations," Cuomo said.
