Patricia Fahy calls for ‘un-biased’ proposition language

In a bill expected to be filed Monday, Albany Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy calls for a short and sweet fix to the way constitutional amendments are worded on the ballot. In fact, she wants to add just four syllables to state election law: “and un-biased.”
The bill comes amid the controversy over the wording of next week’s ballot proposition to legalize Vegas-style casino gambling in New York, which good-government advocates argue was penned with leading language intended to nudge voters toward approving it.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration has defended the wording, which plays up the economic benefits of gambling, and successfully fended of a lawsuit attacking it.
“The referendum language was amended in a biased way to imply increased job growth and revenues, and school aid and property tax relief even though there is a rather mixed history on sustained economic development from casino gaming,” Fahy, a first-term Democrat, said in a statement.
