Albany DA Soares Says No Criminal Conduct By Vito Lopez; Slams Assembly Treatment Of Vics

Albany County District Attorney David Soares blasted the state Assembly’s handling of sexual harassment complaints as “awful,” this morning but said he found no basis for a criminal investigation by his office.

Soares told reporters at the Capitol that Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan – who investigated the Vito Lopez sexual harassment scandal as a special prosecutor – has not contacted his office about possible violations of law within Albany County.

“I can certainly suggest to you that there’s ethical, credible ethical lapses and institutional lapses in how matters were addressed, reported, but I don’t see anything that had been done there that would cause us to begin an investigation to determine whether criminal liability would be assessed,” Soares said.

Still, Soares was scathing in his rebuke of the Assembly’s handling of the matter and predicted it would jump start a wider conversation about how the Legislature deals with sexual harassment allegations
