Session will see a push for new gun safety law

By DAN O'REGAN

In New York state there is no law requiring gun owners to safely secure their guns and keep them out of the reach of children. Although the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Act, or SAFE Act, passed last year includes a provision requiring gun owners to safely store their guns away from any household member who has been convicted of a felony or domestic violence crime, has been involuntarily committed or is currently under an order of protection, the law does not require guns to be safely stored away from children in the house.

"Laws making adults liable if kids get their hands on guns if guns are in the home could certainly help," said Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Leah Gunn Barrett. "If adults know there is a law saying that they have a responsibility to keep their guns secured and locked up and away from a child's access; I think that goes some way towards keeping kids more safe if they have to live in homes with guns."

Paulin said she will be introducing legislation in the next legislative session dealing with child access prevention. Paulin said the bill is similar to another piece of legislation (A.03221/S.01804) she introduced this past legislative session that would require the safe storage of all guns either in a safe or with a locking device, and provides penalties for simple and complex violations.
