Comptroller wants AT&T to disclose data-sharing
by Casey Seiler
Comptroller Tom DiNapoli earlier this month filed a shareholder resolution with AT&T requesting that the company publish periodic reports detailing any data-sharing it has done with U.S. or foreign governments. The $160 billion state Common Retirement Fund, with DiNapoli as its sole trustee, owns more than half a billion dollars in AT&T stock.
The resolution, OSC says, will be voted on at the companys 2014 annual meeting scheduled for late April.
Customer trust is critical for any business, but nowhere is it more so than for those corporations that handle our personal data and communications, DiNapoli said in a statement. AT&T has not made it clear to investors or customers what data it shares or with whom. Customers should not be the last to know how their personal information is being used by governmental agencies.
DiNapoli has been aggressive about using the CRFs assets to make political points leverage greater shareholder value by insisting upon corporate best practices on foreign policy matters, environmental issues and other topics
