NY Assembly's Sheldon Silver Open To Cuomo Plan To Fund Pre-K Without Tax Hike On Wealthy

BY CELESTE KATZ

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan), who has been a staunch backer of Mayor de Blasio’s push to expand pre-kindergarten programs, on Tuesday expressed a willingness to go along with Gov. Cuomo’s plan to fund it without a tax increase.

“I want to see what the numbers are and where they go,” Silver told reporters after Cuomo’s budget presentation in Albany.

De Blasio earlier said that despite Cuomo's proposal, he'll keep lobbying for the tax hike on the wealthy he says should underwrite the expansion of early childhood education in the city.

“Our members have supported Mayor de Blasio. Clearly, if the numbers are sufficient to support the things the members want then I think the members will be fine," Silver said. "I think what’s important is to examine the overall program and see that there’s sufficient funds for the overall program.”

... to finance pre K was the most prominent issue.

This is a democracy. Our side won, their side lost.

Give us the fucking tax hike for fuck's sake.
