Progressive coalition calls Cuomo's tax cuts a 'misguided effort'

By MATTHEW DONDIEGO

A coalition of progressive groups is criticizing Gov. Andrew Cuomo's

2014 – 2015 budget proposal, slamming the governor for including targeted tax breaks its members say would benefit wealthy state residents and the banking industry on the backs of average New Yorkers.

In response to the budget proposal, the groups launched the #NYInequality campaign to address what they call the growing inequality gap in New York state. The coalition of labor, faith groups and other advocacy groups also delivered a letter to state leaders urging Senate and Assembly leaders to negotiate changes to the budget that "meaningfully address New York's income inequality crisis, that lifts families and children out of poverty, and that grow our economy from the bottom up."

"Everyone is coming together with a simple message: Right now we cannot afford to spend a $2 billion surplus on tax cuts for the wealthiest New Yorkers," said Ron Deutsch, executive director of New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness. "We think this is a misguided effort. We think that instead of doing this, what we need to be focused on is the greatest income inequality of any state in the nation, which is what we have here in New York right now."

I'm here in NJ and on the NY tv stations they run these commercials touting how businesses don't have to pay taxes or low taxes or whatever the specifics of it are. They claim that "If there's a policy that will grow the economy, then we're for it!" Yeah, there is. It's called taxing the wealthy adn increasing public infrastructure. Let's see you do that.

I don't get the sense that he's doing this for presidential aspirations. I get the impression he just really believes in this BS.
