House Oversight Committee Seeks Return Of $15 Billion In Medicaid Funds From New York

BY GLENN BLAIN
Leaders of a key congressional oversight committee want New York to pay back billions of dollars in supposed Medicaid overpayments before it is allowed to repurpose federal dollars to help salvage Brooklyn hospitals.

In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Tuesday, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-California) and two other Republican committee members said the federal government should take action to recover the money from New York before granting the state’s request for a $10 billion Medicaid waiver – a portion of which state officials have said would be used to help floundering hospitals in Brooklyn.

“We urge you to ensure taxpayers are justly compensated for decades of Medicaid overpayments received by New York State prior to the approval of this pending waiver,” Issa and the committee members wrote in the letter.

A year ago, Issa’s committee issued a report accusing New York of overcharging Medicaid by $15 billion from 1991 through 2011. The committee has also launched a probe of the Cuomo administration’s efforts to reduce Medicaid fraud.
