Good Government Groups Urge Gov. Cuomo To Stand Firm On Campaign Finance Reform

BY GLENN BLAIN
The state Legislature may be off this week but good government aren’t taking a break from their drive to see campaign finance reform finally enacted in New York.

Representatives from a half dozen advocacy groups held a press conference in Albany Tuesday to urge Gov. Cuomo to "keep his bold promise" and enact campaign finance reforms – including public financing of elections and beefed up enforcement at the Board of Elections - as part of the state’s 2014-15 budget.

“We need the governor to remain strong and resolute,” said Dick Dadey of the group Citizens Union.
Cuomo inserted the campaign finance reform measures into his budget proposal but they still face opposition from Senate GOP leader Dean Skelos, who does not want to see tax dollars used to finance election campaigns.

The good government groups urged Cuomo and Democratic leaders in the Legislature to insist that the reform measures stay in the budget. If necessary, they added, Cuomo should write the proposals into any budget extender legislation – effectively daring the Senate GOP to accept them or shut down the government.
