Number of NY farms dropped 2.2% over five years

The number of farms in New York dropped 2.2 percent and farmland increased slightly between 2007 through 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Krenzer farmPreliminary numbers from the agency’s 2012 census showed there were 35,538 New York farms, down from 36,352, the Associated Press reported yesterday.

The agency says the amount of farmland increased to 7,183,579 acres from 7,174,743 acres, the AP said. The average size of a farm grew to 202 acres from 197 acres.
