NYC Public Advocate Letitia James: Cut Snow-Shoveling Fines By Half For Elderly, Disabled

CELESTE KATZ

Noting a head-turning increase in citations during this stormy season, James, who is sponsoring a bill in the City Council, wants to slash fines by half for those who need extra help or time to move mountains of snow.

She also wants the city to draw on non-profit community groups to draft extra workers to clean up after storms for those who need help.

In an interview with the Daily News, James said the idea arose out of her own experience representing a swath of Brooklyn on the Council, where she chaired the Sanitation Committee.

An elderly homeowner who never cleared her walks was targeted with many complaints from her neighbors -- and plenty of citations for her inaction.

I like that one.

A *lot*.

All of a sudden we're suffering an embarrassment of riches in this city, in terms of quality of leadership.

And I never thought I'd say anything like that.
