NYC Council To Officially Skip St. Patrick's Day Parade

ERIN DURKIN
The City Council will officially boycott the St. Patrick’s Day parade over its treatment of gay groups, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced Tuesday.

Individual Council members will still be free to march - and at least a few are likely to do so - and Mark-Viverito, along with Mayor de Blasio and other top city officials, had already announced they would skip the parade.

But Mark-Viverito’s move goes a step further than even her openly gay predecessor Christine Quinn, barring the use of a City Council banner, sergeant at arms, or any other official presence. Quinn was vocal about her own refusal to participate, but allowed an official Council contingent, according to the Council.

“The St. Patrick’s Parade should be a time when all New Yorkers can come together and march openly as who they are- but right now that is not the case for the LGBT community,” Mark-Viverito said.
