Sheldon Silver Blasts Moreland Commission's Taxpayer Funded "Fishing Expedition"

BY GLENN BLAIN
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver on Tuesday blasted Gov. Cuomo’s corruption fighting Moreland Commission for going on a taxpayer-funded fishing expedition.

“The commission, we believe, has exceeded its mandate and has been engaged in a fishing expedition to intimidate legislators,” Silver told reporters at the Capitol.

“The state has spent a great deal of money to conduct this fishing expedition and I think that so far the greatest result they have come to, they have recommended what this conference has been saying and passing for the last 25 years – public campaign financing in New York State.”

Gov. Cuomo formed the Moreland Commission last summer after lawmakers balked at adopting his package of ethics reforms. Both the Senate and Assembly have gone to court to block the commission’s subpoenas, arguing it has no authority to investigate the Legislature.
