Sen. Tony Avella Quits Democratic Conference For IDC; Dems Say It Hurts Progressive Causes
BY KEN LOVETT
Surprised at losing Sen. Tony Avella to the Independent Democratic Conference, mainstream Senate Dems Wednesday morning called it a blow for progressive causes.
"It's unfortunate that progressive policies continue to be stymied because of divisions created by Senators who choose to empower Republicans," said Senate Democrat spokesman Mike Murphy.
Avella hadn't given the Senate Dems a heads up before going public in today's Daily News.
His departure particularly stings given that he is from Queens, the home county of Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris, who had offered Avella lots of electoral help in the past.

(14,498 posts)>>>While there are 32 Democrats in the 63-seat chamber enough for a majority they are broken into several factions.
Avellas move gives the Independent Democratic Conference five members and leaves the traditional Dems with 24 members.
There are also two indicted Dems, Sens. Malcolm Smith from Queens and John Sampson of Brooklyn, who dont sit with any caucus, and one who sits with the 29-member GOP conference.>>>
We're going to primary Klein up here.(BX/Westchester) Queens DEMS could/should do the same to Avella.
And... re the above: I only see two "factions", not "several". Smith was indicted for trying to bribe his way to the GOP nomination for mayor of NYC. I don't see how that makes him any kind of Democrat.
Sampson ( I believe) sits alone for some other complicated, corruption-related reason. (If I'm wrong I will apologize and retract.). In any event, one member does not make a "faction".
