Sandy shows need for protection on Long Island's South Shore

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Department of Interior have finally agreed on the details for a project that would protect coastal areas of Suffolk County from a potential natural disaster, opening the door for the public to provide comments on the plan in early March.
The details of the plan include ways to protect endangered species and determine an appropriate time to begin the project, called Fire Island to Montauk Point, or FIMP. The plan seeks $700 million in funding from the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act a federal bill that authorized up to $60 billion for disaster relief agencies to establish multiple barriers of protection.
Among the objectives are building 15-foot-high coastal dunes that would decrease the damage of a natural disaster, elevating homes and businesses in flood zones and upgrading roads.
