Cuomo urges better oil train oversight from feds after 2 derailments

Khurram Saeed, The Journal News

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday called on high-ranking federal officials to beef up safety standards for trains that carry crude oil from North Dakota and Canada, and cited two oil train derailments that occurred upstate last week.

The oil trains are among those that travel CSX's River Line, hauling tens of millions of gallons of the volatile crude oil from the Midwest through Rockland to refineries along the East Coast and to Canada. About 14 oil trains, each more than a mile long, use the line each week.

Concern about the shipments continues to grow as a number of oil trains have been involved in serious incidents during the past year.

The two most recent derailments in New York occurred within four days of each other. There were no injuries or spills in either incident.
