Mayor de Blasio Drops NYC Lawsuit Against Anti-Racial Profiling Law

BY JENNIFER FERMINO
Mayor de Blasio is dropping the city's lawsuit against a controversial City Council bill that makes it easier to sue the NYPD for racial profiling.

De Blasio, who'd promised to ax the lawsuit during the campaign, said the decision to stop legal action will help reform the "broken" stop and frisk policy championed by his predecessor, Michael Bloomberg.

“There is absolutely no contradiction in protecting the public safety of New Yorkers and respecting their civil liberties. In fact, those two priorities must go hand-in-hand,” de Blasio said in a statement announcing the withdrawal on Thursday.

“No New Yorker should ever face discrimination based on the color of his or her skin. We are going to be explicit in setting fair and effective standards that prevent bias in any form.”
