Gowanus and fetid canal up for historic district designation by state

Gritty Gowanus could soon become a state historic district.
A large swath of the neighborhood, covering a total of 422 properties near and around the notoriously polluted Gowanus Canal, is up for historic designation.
A citizens group launched the effort to obtain the designation more than a decade ago, and the state Historic Preservation Office deemed the proposed district eligible in 2006. The board was set to vote on it Thursday, but the agency postponed that vote for 60 days following a request by the city for more time to review the proposal.
A state-designated historic district subjects property owners to far fewer restrictions than those designated by the city, which landmarks buildings to restrict their alteration.
