The Congressional Black Caucus is urging House and Senate leaders to pass the Harriet Tubman National Historical Parks Act, which would create national historical parks honoring the abolitionist in Auburn and Maryland.
In a letter to congressional leaders, including House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., the caucus asked the two houses to come together and pass the bill honoring Tubman.
"As members of the Congressional Black Caucus, we urge you to pass the Harriet Tubman National Historical Parks Act, H.R. 664 and S.247," the caucus wrote. "As the country pauses to mark Black History Month, we urge you to move this bill to honor Harriet Tubman's place in American history as an abolitionist, a suffragist and conductor on the Underground Railroad."
The Tubman parks bill is sponsored in the House by U.S. Rep. Dan Maffei, D-Syracuse. The Senate sponsor is U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat.
